The Fuel Cycle Chemistry (FCC) group within the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division (NEFCD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks applications for the position of Senior Research Staff Member with an emphasis on the behavior of off-gas and the chemical processes that occur at high temperatures in highly corrosive environments such as molten salts.

The primary mission of the FCC group is to apply fundamental chemistry, materials science, and chemical engineering concepts to cutting edge research in the field of actinide and fission product chemistry across the whole nuclear fuel cycle. The FCC group leads and manages projects focused on the separations and the management of fission products through out the back end of the fuel cycle along with a variety of non-proliferation and safeguards activities.  This position will report to the Fuel Cycle Chemistry Group Leader and will be expected to collaborate with nuclear and chemical engineer loop designers, phenomenological model and code developers, reactor licensing agencies, safeguards personnel, and coordinate with colleagues at universities and other DOE national laboratories.  The position will also provide the opportunity for the applicant to develop and grow new research areas aligned to their and the Group’s interests

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead and direct multidisciplinary project teams to support research with inorganic molten salts, or air sensitive materials at high temperatures, and off-gas handling/ capture from fission processes.
  • Contribute to the strategic direction of off-gas nuclear energy programs.
  • Working with fission gasses, air-sensitive materials, and inorganic salts at high temperatures.
  • Provide expert guidance towards the development of on-line high temperature processing concepts including study of the salt redox properties and corrosion mitigation in off-gas systems.
  • Provide expert guidance towards the development of off-gas capture and transport modeling for nuclear fission related research.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance and industry-relevant experience to early career staff to assist in developing the next generation of fuel cycle experts.
  • Represent work performed by the group for internal and external review, providing presentations to sponsors and the general public.
  • Contribute to technical papers, journal articles, reports, and proposals for internal and external release, and represent the organization and sponsors via technical presentations in workshops and conferences.
  • Communicate regularly with internal and external collaborators.
  • Demonstrate results-oriented behavior, be able to work independently and in a team environment, thoroughly document work performed, and communicate work performed to peers and project sponsors.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Inorganic Chemistry, Radiochemistry, Chemical Engineering or related discipline.
  • >15 years experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary environment and ability and willingness to perform hands on work, acquire new knowledge, and learn new skills are required.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced R&D environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
  • Working with inorganic molten salts or at least air-sensitive materials at high temperatures.
  • Experience planning and running an experimental program with the capability to develop experiments for model/code validation.
  • Demonstrated experience in successful proposal writing and project management.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated publication excellence.
  • Organized, detail-oriented and sensitized to a nuclear safety culture.
  • Experience in analyzing material behavior in harsh environments.
  • Fission product behavior as governed by thermochemistry and thermophysical properties.
  • Thermochemical measurements at high temperatures: heat capacity, thermal analysis, viscosity, interfacial tension, thermal conductivity, vapor pressure, and their relationships to the thermophysical properties of mixtures
  • Chemical thermodynamics and experimental measurements (enthalpies, vapor pressures, melting points and phase diagrams).
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and writing skills to enable effective interaction and communication with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors
  • As guided by the leadership team, perform research and provide technical analyses of resulting data
  • The successful candidate will ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
